When he came to, Hawke found Nick bending over him. As he opened his eyes, Nick heaved a great sigh of relief. “Bro. You’re back from…wherever.” Hawke tried to pull himself up, but wasn’t able to. “Let me help.” Nick grabbed him under the shoulders and tugged him upright. Hawke passed his hand in a bewildered way across his forehead.

“So what happened? Something grabbed me…”

Nick shook his head. “I couldn’t see clearly. There was, like, a shadow beside you. I dunno. Then, an insane crow attacked it.” Nick grinned. “The bird won. That crow’s a dynamo. Even if he looks like he’s seen better days.”

“Bla-ah,” came a mournful, croaking sound from a nearby tree.

“I salute you, Sir Hazard.” Nick gave a little bow.

“Yeah, me too.” Hawke looked around, shaking his head. “Nick, there are awful things here in the forest. Creatures that make you feel frozen inside. I saw them all around before I got knocked over.”

Nick turned and stared down the aisle of trees from which he had come. “Yeah, I know. But there’s…I dunno…something more. Something good trying to connect.” He shook his shaggy locks. “Don’t listen to me. I don’t know what the heck I’m talking about. But I felt something.” He pointed back at the trees, and then stuck out an arm and helped pull Hawke forward. “Man, wish I could get you going like this at home.”

“Wish you could too. Where’s Beck? Is she with you?”

“She was, but I lost her. Seems to happen a lot around this place. People disappearing, I mean.” He pointed to the aisle of trees. The fog was melting away, and crisp sunlight took its place. “I wonder where this country or world is.”

Hawke gained strength by the second. “The question of questions. Maybe we made it all up. Kind of designed it, like a computer game world.”

Nick gave a rueful grin, arching his pointed brows. “If we did, we did. It’s an interesting place, but I believe I could come up with a few improvements. Nah, we didn’t make this up. So, what’s happening next? Are you on the tail of another star?”

Hawke grinned. “Like a comet tail, you mean? Tomorrow. The green one - Kadoroc.”

“Interesting name. So where do you go to catch it?” Nick pulled at his ear, the way he always did when he was thinking hard.

“According to Greystone’s map, somewhere close by. In one of the farmer’s fields.”

“No more clue than that? He’s got a lot of fields. Believe me, I know. His place is like a country unto itself.”

“Greystone mentioned something about an old grave. You haven’t noticed one, have you?” Hawke had retrieved the tube with the map and was starting to twist the gold tip.

“There’s a little cemetery. A pet cemetery. MacTash likes to bury his animals. He says they are better friends to him than people. The place is not far from the barn. When is the big event?”

“Tomorrow night. But I have to set off exactly at noon.
